Adaptive anisotropic meshing for steady convection-dominated problems

چکیده
Obtaining accurate solutions for convection–diffusion equations is challenging due to the presence of layers when convection dominates the diffusion. To solve this problem, we design an adaptive meshing algorithm which optimizes the alignment of anisotropic meshes with the numerical solution. Three main ingredients are used. First, the streamline upwind Petrov–Galerkin method is used to produce a stabilized solution. Second, an adapted metric tensor is computed from the approximate solution. Third, optimized anisotropic meshes are generated from the computed metric tensor by an anisotropic centroidal Voronoi tessellation algorithm. Our algorithm is tested on a variety of two-dimensional examples and the results shows that the algorithm is robust in detecting layers and efficient in avoiding non-physical oscillations in the numerical approximation. 2009 Elsevier B.V. On adaptive anisotropic mesh optimisation for convection-diffusion problems
Numerical solution of convection-dominated problems requires the use of layer-adapted anisotropic meshes. Since a priori construction of such meshes is difficult for complex problems, it is proposed to generate them in an adaptive way by moving the node positions in the mesh such that an a posteriori error estimator of the overall error of the approximate solution is reduced. This approach is f...
متن کاملAnisotropic Mesh Optimization and Its Application in Adaptivity
The construction of solution-adapted meshes is addressed within an optimization framework. An approximation of the second spatial derivative of the solution is used to get a suitable metric in the computational domain. A mesh quality is proposed and optimized under this metric, accounting for both the shape and the size of the elements. For this purpose, a topological and geometrical mesh impro...
متن کاملKrylov-Subspace Preconditioners for Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods
Standard (conforming) finite element approximations of convection-dominated convectiondiffusion problems often exhibit poor stability properties that manifest themselves as nonphysical oscillations polluting the numerical solution. Various techniques have been proposed for the stabilisation of finite element methods (FEMs) for convection-diffusion problems, such as the popular streamline upwind...

SUMMARY Convection-dominated problems are typiied by the presence of strongly directional features such as shock waves or boundary layers. Resolution of numerical solutions using an isotropic mesh can lead to unnecessary reenement in directions parallel to such features. This is particularly important in three dimensions where the grid size increases rapidly during conventional isotropic reenem...
متن کاملNumerical Studies of Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Two Dimensional Convection-Dominated Problems
In this paper, we study the stability and accuracy of adaptive finite element methods for the convection-dominated convection-diffusion-reaction problem in the twodimension space. Through various numerical examples on a type of layer-adapted grids (Shishkin grids), we show that the mesh adaptivity driven by accuracy alone cannot stabilize the scheme in all cases. Furthermore the numerical appro...
